Project Description: Labor is a two-part project that explores the Black maternal mortality crisis from institutional and personal perspectives directed by visual artist, Carolyn Lazard. The documentary segment captures simulations in NYC hospitals where medical staff undergo cultural sensitivity training to address biases. The narrative portion follows a Black individual's experience during a first-trimester checkup at an unsupportive hospital, illustrating the emotional and systemic challenges Black birthing people face. Together, these stories reveal the urgent need for change in maternal healthcare.
