Hi Diana, tell us a little more about yourself and what you do.
My name is Diana, Mexican born and raised. Leo sun.. Libra rising.
I graduated from Fashion school and started working as a fashion designer first, then I became an agent at New Icon in Mexico City. I finally got sponsored to move to New York and have been working as an agent for New Icon New York for about eight years now. I’m a big fan of live music and travelling also and believe that our industry is also connected to those.
What for you defines the models that you represent at New Icon?
At New Icon we are focused on building the careers of our models and talents. Always looking for who will potentially be the next star, the one we can push to the top and that needs a solid team by her/his/them side. So someone interesting and unique, I guess. It is true that personality really makes a difference when you’re working in the fashion industry. This is what defines a New Icon model.
When someone wants to become a model, what should they do and what should they submit to the agents?
I would recommend them to look up for a mother agency that they can relate with and that can accompany them and help them get ready for the next step(s). A strong set of digitals is a must for any international agencies. The less, the better… Digitals should be simple: a pair of pants and a t-shirt and absolutely no makeup. Include all of your measurements and make sure these are up to date. There is a market for everyone, the mother agency will help you find yours if an agent doesn’t want to sign you right away.
What types of profiles are you looking for during open calls?
When we have open calls we like to meet all types of models, men, women, non-binary, trans and also both commercial and editorial profiles. We are known to be a diverse agency, representing models of all races and all sizes, giving a chance to models that are also different and from a different background.
Who and how should the people applying to become a model prepare for an open call?
Read carefully what the agency is looking for… Every agency is different and putting the work and effort before showing up at an open call can make the difference. Check If there is a minimum or maximum height, if there is a certain type that is looked for. Wear black clothes and make it simple. Come into the room very confident and with a nice, polite and determined attitude. Minimum makeup to no makeup, no sunglasses, hats or extras that hide your features.
Any advice to all of those that want to become a model or to have a model agent?
I believe that the key to modeling is patience, to work hard and to listen to the ones that are professionally here for you. Things take time, prepare yourself the best you can and try to learn the most you can… Research and get cultured into the modeling world. Know what to expect. Also — be smart when signing a contract and look up for a team you feel safe and comfortable working with as they will be with you along your journey in the industry.
